Atascadero Lake is located in a natural seasonal waterway, which was dammed at its present site by the Army during maneuvers held in this area between 1904 and 1912. When E.G. Lewis developed Atascadero he raised the dam to make a more usable lake, which he called the “jewel of Atascadero.” There he built a gazebo, lighthouse and windmill, and created a swimming area where the present spillway is located.
